Desert Tortoise Survey Field Work
KEC is seeking a person to fill an immediate position to support desert tortoise clearance surveys. You will work with a team of three to seven people under the supervision of a federally authorized designated desert tortoise biologist. The work is in the Mojave Desert, starting from March 31 and ending approximately May 31. Each day you will hike approximately 6 to 7 miles on a protocol desert tortoise survey. Days are no more than 10 hours long and the work is six days a week.
Initially, the terrain will be relatively flat but this will graduate to difficult rocky climbs as the season progresses. This is a great position for a person still in undergrad school or recently graduated and seeking a seasonal field job. In addition to previous field experience, it would be a plus if you are the kind of person who goes birding, herping, or botanizing in your spare time anyway. There is a potential to get experience with desert tortoise that will count toward eventual approval as a desert tortoise biologist.
Send your resume with three references to [email protected]. If you have previous desert tortoise experience, please submit your federal or state desert tortoise qualifications form.
You will be paid overtime and per diem. You can save your per diem and camp on site or stay at a hotel and drive to the site each day. Informal questions are welcome before applying.
